Sticker design, from sketch to sheet
Designing custom stickers, and finding somewhere to print them.
Every sticker starts as a shape on whatever paper is nearest and ends as a file a printer can cut. This site covers the steps in between, and compares the tools and printing services people use for them.
- cut line
The path the blade follows. On a die-cut sticker it hugs the shape.
- bleed
Artwork carried past the cut, so a cut that drifts a little still lands on colour.
- safe area
Where words and anything important belong, clear of the edge.
Five decisions
What you decide before a sticker gets printed.
The guides on this site are organised around these, in roughly the order they come up.
- shape
Die-cut or kiss-cut
A die-cut sticker is cut right through to its own outline. A kiss-cut cuts the sticker layer only and leaves the backing whole, which is how a sheet of several stickers holds together.
- material
Vinyl or paper
Vinyl copes with water, sunlight and handling, so it suits bottles, laptops and outdoor use. Paper is the cheaper, writable choice for labels, packaging and anything kept indoors.
- finish
Gloss, matte or something louder
Gloss makes colours brighter, matte keeps glare down, clear vinyl lets the surface show through, and holographic or glitter finishes change the whole look.
- file
Cut line, bleed and safe area
The printer cuts along a line you supply. Artwork should run past that line so a slightly off cut leaves no white edge, and words should sit well inside it.
- quantity
How many to order
A small batch is the cheap way to check colours and size in your hand. Bigger runs usually lower the price of each sticker, and some printers set a minimum.
From doodle to sheet
How a sticker design usually travels.
Four stops, whichever tool and printer you end up using.
- first
Doodle
Rough out the shape and what goes on it, at the size it will be printed.
- then
Clean outline
Redraw it in a design tool, with a cut line that follows the shape.
- then
Proof
Check the printer’s proof for bleed, colour and text near the edge.
- last
Print
Pick the cut, material, finish and quantity, and send the file.
Notes in the margin
What to expect from this site.
Design tools and printing services are covered side by side, because a sticker needs one of each.
Comparisons are written out in words: what each option does well, where it falls short, and who it suits.
Nothing is published here yet. Guides will be linked from this page as they are written. The editorial standards say how they will be written.
